My thoughts exactly. And how about all the things that "modern society" has taken away from us? How about telling stories around a fire, how about singing together, how about spending the day eating berries off the bushes, still warm from the sun? How about being friends with your neighbours and not living in fear of other people? Giving up all of those things for electric lights and dishwashers seems like a pretty damned poor trade to me.

But the good news is, we can change it! We're doing it right now!

Hello Miranda, Great post! Nuclear power is certainly dangerous, and we don't want to have a Chernobyl on our hands, especially in a densely populated area like the LML.

On the other hand, from an environmentalist perspective nuclear power has a few potential huge advantages. The biggest is that it generates power all the time which is a huge drawback of wind and solar. The electricity grid can simply not afford to be only on when the wind is blowing, or the sun is shining. Something has to be able to pick up the slack. Nuclear power, if done very very carefully seems to me to be something that that could be a good part of the mix.

Secondly, nuclear can also generate tremendous amounts of electricity. With the exception of massive hydro projects there seem to be few options that can come up with the same amount of electricity.

Third point, Canadian built and designed CANDU nuclear reactors use a type of "pebble" technology that is nearly "meltdown" proof. The reactors don't require any of the "control rods" that most nuclear plants do to prevent a runaway nuclear reaction. The CANDU ones as I understand, if left to their own devices would just peter themselves out, and actually require human interference to sustain them. Something like this greatly reduces the chance of human error causing a nuclear disaster.

That said, I'm not sure Nuclear is the answer. Just a potential, and immediately available solution to the CO2 problem. It's one of the only currently available, and proven CO2 "free" ways of generating power capable of generating as much power as we are currently from fossil fuels. We'd have to be bloody careful what we do with the waste though.

Cheers!
